Time Warp: the return of Marimekko (and with it, print and color!!)

Marimekko Corporation is a leading Finnish textile and clothing design company that was established in 1951. The company designs, manufactures and markets high-quality clothing, interior decoration textiles, bags and other accessories under the Marimekko brand, both in Finland and abroad.

This timeless company is popular for their colored patterns and designs. Think Austin Powers, Diana Ross and Jackie Kennedy, the prints have been around for the most important part of the last century and are making a huge comeback this year pairing up with trendy H & M Hennes & Mauritz AB.

H&M's summer collection 2008 has all the Marimekko signature since both companies worked together to offer a fresh alternative. The impressive collection of around 50 products is being sold in H&M stores in 28 countries since the beginning of April. The colourful range on seasonal favourite pieces, as well as wardrobe basics for summer include some extras like swimwear and beach accessories. The versatility of the prints and the diversity of the designs makes sure that the collection will translate well on the beach the same as the city.

The featured prints for the woman’s wear, menswear and children’s wear collections are “Keidas” an Art Noveau swirl; “Linssi” with diagonal ovals; “Petrooli” a red-rimmed white spot on a black background; and “Jonas” a black spidery print an a white background.

"Our design team has long admired Marimekko's vivid patterns and colours. When our designers came up with the idea of creating a collection with Marimekko patterns, it felt very natural and timely. The summer collection 2008 will be joyfully fresh like a vitamin injection," states H&M's head of design Margareta van den Bosch.

"H&M is one of the trendiest and most successful fashion houses in the world. I see a great value in our co-operation. I believe that it will enhance Marimekko's international recognition among young and fashion-conscious consumers," says Kirsti Paakkanen, President of Marimekko.

And you would think that this is would be enough for a year, but think again since Marimekko is also pairing up with Artek, another Finnish top design house, to present "THE MILKBAR" their new spring summer design project together in the “Salone del Mobile”, Milan’s and I would dare to say one of europe’s most important design appointments.

”I think it is magnificent that Marimekko and Artek, two Finnish top design houses, join their forces in Milan in a ground-breaking and highly differentiating manner. I am sure that our co-presentation will evoke plenty of interest in our companies and Finnish design”, says Mika Ihamuotila, President of Marimekko.

”The purity and authenticity of Finnish design gain an utterly new dimension in our common project. For the last two years, the Artek Pavilion has been the meeting-point in Milan. This year, we create something new and fascinating by collaborating with Marimekko”, points out Mirkku Kullberg, the Managing Director of Artek.

Keep the dates then to see Marimekko at the Milan Salone Internazionale del Mobile, 16–21 April 2008 at SPAZIO CRISPITRE (internal courtyard) Viale Francesco Crispi 3, 20121 Milan (from 10 am to 10 pm) and remember you can already find the Spring Summer 08 clothes collection at H &M.
